Online Education Programs. Are they worth the paper they are printed on?

I am considering persuing an online degree in Accounting. I was wondering if the degree is readily accepted by companies during the hiring process in comparison to going to a brick and mortar school.

Response from anyone who has gone through an online degree program, obtained a degree and found quality work. Did you feel like the fact that the degree was received online had any drawbacks?

Any helpful/informative comments are appreciated.

Make sure they are regionally accredited if you want to use the credits later to transfer to a brick and mortar school. Also if you use Penn Foster ,Ashworth or Stratford I read that some employers will not accept as legit.
I have been researching these schools and the biggest complaint I see is that they use outdated materials to train you.
On the up side Penn Fosters credits are so cheap- I checked with my local community college which has an online program and they are 4 times the cost!

I think if you want a really good online degree with no worries you should go for a school that also has the brick and mortar- but it will not be cheap( Drexel was 600 per credit) and they do not offer every course online so u still have to go for some.

If you find a school online just do some research- u can also check consumer Rip off reports dot com- some of these schools have hundreds of complaints on there!
Good LUCK to You and let us know what u decide!

Online degrees, what is the criteria to find out if the degree is accepted at other colleges?

There are many online degree programs offered on the internet. How can I check if the online degree is accepted by the job market. A school teacher with a master’s degree in education had to pay back her salary increase because the degree wasn’t accepted by the Dept of Ed.

Yes there are many but are they from accredited institutions? Need to be very careful about that since only those from such an institution will be nationally recognized. If it’s accredited I’d go for it. Check this website for the list of online degrees that are nationally accepted

can you pl suggest best rated online programs to earn dual degree in teachers education?

Trying to assess and evaluate the best online dual degree program offered in order to complete and earn teacher education degree. How to rate the best online program ? Please advice.

plenty of online schools offer bachelors degrees and masters degrees with a teaching emphasis – but that is not sufficient to teach. You need a credential.

I have been answering this the same way for the last year – There are no schools that offer one.

You cannot become a teacher online only.

Is the University of Massachusetts – Lowell continuing education online BA degree accredited regionally? Good?

I might be interested in it, but I don’t want one of those bogus "degree mill" degrees. I’m already in college at a four year school, but online is convenient for me. UML looked good, but I’m unsure if this degree is for real, and if employers would be able to tell if it is an "online degree". By the way the degree is for I.T. and it is listed as a bachelors degree on their site. thx.

UMass-Lowell is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, which is a recognized regional accrediting body. All their programs, including online programs, are accredited by the regional accrediting body.

For more information about accreditation and degree mills, check out the Council of Higher Education Accreditation website at www.chea.org.

Are there any online universities for Elementary Education Degree in NY?

Are there any online universities for Elementary Education Degree in NY?

None that I know about. YOu probably could take some classes online but not the whole degree. NY certification to become a teacher is one of the most stringent in the US. Teachers trained in NY can work anywhere but if you trained in another state it is hard to get certified in NYS.

Online Master’s of Education degrees – HELP!?

Please save my bleary eyes from more research. I am a spouse of a U.S. military officer, living in Asia (not near any universities). Obviously, I cannot obtain a master’s degree in the traditional sense. That leaves online. My concern is having a degree on my resume from an institution that nobody’s heard of. I know that there are plenty of good quality schools out there that are not widely known. However, I feel a bit leery of the schools that are exclusively online. Even if they’re properly accredited, are there any exclusively online schools that are great quality, somewhat known, and "safe?"

Some of the well known schools like Drexel and Penn St. have some online master’s degree programs, but their programs are not as flexible as the lesser known schools’ programs. Being a military spouse who moves frequently, flexibility is critical. Quality is critical! Thoughts? Advice?

Thank you for your time in reading this long post.

Phoenix Online has a master degree in education. Although it is not a Drexel or Penn St. when it comes down to reputation – its masters degree program in education is certainly accept by the majority (if not all states by now) department of educations as legitimate. I would suggest looking at Phoenix’s program. No one in education today can honestly say (unless their head has been in the sand for the past 10 plus years) has not heard of Phoenix Online’s online degree programs (although they might be unaware of their master’s in education program.

Good Luck!!!

Are online degrees "respected" by potential employers?

I am wanting to persue a career as a paralegal. I feel right now is the best time for me. I have been wanting to do this for about 4yrs now. The online option is all I have right now, without a drivers lisence on campus classes are not possible. I guess my question is, Will law firms, and attorneys look at a degree from an online education as credible knowledge as they would a tradional degree?

Nope……….

Do you think if I were to get my Masters in Education online it would be accredited??

I have my degree in Communications from EIU, and was thinking about going into education and getting my masters. What do you think of online degrees/masters?

As long as it’s on the Higher Learning Commission website and is REGIONALLY accredited and accepted by your state, you should have no problem.

Is a degree or certificate from online or distance learning courses, accepted?

Can someone get a good job this way? or is the traditional way (attending an actual campus) mostly only accepted by employers?

It really depends on the job your looking for. If you’re known as a hard worker and have references to back it up, the school your degree/certification is from is secondary. If not, then it will matter more.

The best way to land a good job with a degree or certification is make sure it’s through an accredited school and you have some experience in what your applying for. Personnally, I’ve finished off a third of me bachelors degree (through Embry-Riddle Aeronautical Univs.) without setting foot on a campus. A quarter of my credits are through military service and schools. However, each university will count job experience and other forms of education differently for certain degree programs.

How are online university degrees viewed by employers?

I am 27 and definitely going back to college but I think I could work more and be able to time manage online college because I could set my schedule. How are these degrees viewed among employers verse a university you actually attend? I am thinking of going for an education degree. Thank you.

As long as the college you attend is regionally accredited any degree you earn should be accepted by potential employers or other academic institutions. In fact nowadays more and more colleges are offering online programs to complement their campus programs as they realize the benefits online programs provide students and the schools themselves. Most of these colleges do not differentiate between a degree earned online or on campus.

My biggest recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges to find the best fit for you and your needs (schedule, tuition, career plans, professor interaction). I would also be sure to ask the schools directly about their accreditation and if they offer any assistance in finding their graduates jobs.

This site has some good information on regionally accredited education degrees and some colleges to help begin/expand your search:

I want to do distance learning course in computer science? Any good colleges offering such course?

I work in software industry and in order to enhance my computer science skills want to do a distance learning masters in comupter science ? My bachelors was not in Computer science though. Are there any good universities providing such courses? And am I eligible for such courses?Any help/web link will be helpful. Thanks.

It really depends what you want to get out of the degree and what was your first degree in. I doubt that any university, which has some value, would accept someone with absolutely no computer education to a master’s degree in computers, unless your degree is in something very close (e.g. engineering).

However, if your degree is in business, perhaps a combination degree of IT and MBA might be good :
http://homemadedegrees.blogspot.com/2007/08/mba-with-concentration-in-it.html

Another idea would be to start over again, and do a first degree (or only a professional diploma/certificate) in computers:

Where can I earn a Bachelor’s degree in Education through an online school??

I am looking to find online degree in either elementary or secondary education. In particular, history. thanx.

I believe Phoenix Online does. And I am pretty sure you would still do practicum work and student teaching. I just did my masters through Walden online and loved it. It was very convenient and I learned a lot. Online schools are really making their way up there these days!

Online Graduate Degree, Capella University?

Does anyone have any information on Capella University? Did anyone attend the college? Any information would be helpful. Should I pursue an MBA degree with them?

Online education is quickly becoming more popular, especially because it allows people the opportunity to start/finish their college education without having it interfere totally in their lives. As long as you make sure that the degree you get is from an accredited institution, there is nothing wrong with an online degree.

There is communication between students and professors. It’s just done over the internet. Remember that every online institution is different with how they handle their students, so I suggest that you take a look at some forums about online education. I’ve listed one blog/forum site you can start out on, as well as the blog of a Capella student. Sorry for the semi-redundant links, I’m just trying to save you some searching time. :-)

Lastly, if you do decide to get your degree online, you should know how to defend it. Some people react negatively to online degrees, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that online degrees and programs are evil or a less effective way of learning. You have to be able to manage your time and be very organized. Getting your degree online could potentially be more difficult than going to a traditional brick & mortar school! There is much more weight put on you as the student because you are responsible for your own schedule.

I hope some of that helps!! :-)

does anyone knows if there are free school for master degree or any course that will add up the knowledge?than

hi…i do want to study again but sad to say dont have enough money to study for masteral or any courses that can possibly enhance my knowledge..i read lots of highschool online school for free….

Chelle, degree’s etc are only papers saying you attended class. They don’t say you’re smart. People with degrees work for people like me I have a 6th grade education and tough myself as did Benjamin Franklin and Warren Buffet the billionaire. Keep studying the way you are and you will see as time goes by what to do with what you have.

Why do you want a master’s? If you have a master’s lets say in education you will get paid a little more but you will have to work 10 years to recoup your expenses.

When you have a degree and start work you start at the bottom.

If you were the employer, would you rather have someone with a 6 years of schooling and no experience or someone with 6 years of successful experience? Think about this for a minute or two?

Would you rather say, No, I don’t have any experience but I read about it in school?

Would you rather say, I have 6 years experience in the field of what you are looking for and this is what I have done.

Any opinions on Capella University?

I am looking to earn an interior design degree from Capella University and I so far am impressed with what I have seen. Does anyone have anything negative to say about them, or praise? Would especially like someone’s opinion if they have graduated or gone there themselves, and how their job placement services are. Thanks ahead of time!
Oops, not interior design, but the Management for Non-Profit organizations…got my schools mixed up. Thanks ahead of time!

I am currently going there for a M.S. in Information Technology. The program is good and the instructors and pretty decent. In regards to job placement, I don’t know how good their services are, as I’m already employed. The are fully accredited by the The Higher Learning Commission and North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, which is helpful in getting future employers to actually give you credit for your degree. I think there is still a bit of a stigma attached to doing your degree online, but suprisingly Capella seems to get a better response to University of Phoenix when I talk about it with peers.

Bottom Line: If you have a lot of self motivation and self direction this is a great school. They will help you help youself, but it will be just as expensive as going to a real campus.

Best of luck!

Which good American/European universities offer Bachelors degree in education online/ correspondence?

anybody doing online Bachelor ( education) degree?

American universities don’t generally offer it. To get an education degree, you have to do things like practicums and student teaching, and that requires actually being at the university.

You could try taking a few of your general education courses online to get started and then register at a regular university to finish your degree.

What are my chances of being accepted to a MS degree program in Molecular Biology or related fields?

If I complete 3 years of experience working as a clinical lab tech, take chemistry/biochem/biology free online courses offered by major universities such as MIT’s at http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/Global/all-courses.htm#Biology , If I complete an associates degree in Medical lab, and if I have a BS degree in computer engineering.

Any comments will be greatly appreciated
associates degree in medical laboratory tech that is

The best chance of getting admitted to a molecular biology lab is to personally contact the person you want to work with. This means looking up recent papers in the top journals and marking down the labs that are doing the work that you find interesting. Then contact the PI (principle investigator) of the lab and tell them you have clinical experience (this is really good) and that you’ve read a recent paper of theirs – then ask an insightful question about that paper. This will at least get your foot in the door.
Good luck!

PS – having a computer science background is a HUGE advantage now in Biology – If your GPA and GREs are good, then you’ll have no problem getting into the school you want.

are online schools for an associates degree in healthcare considered a valid education to employers?

I keep getting all these e-mails for an on-line associates degree for medical transcription and other careers in the healthcare field, I have been tempted to do it but I wanted to know how employers view an online education versus going to the tech/trade school, is the degree online just as valid

“My advice is to avoid online educators: these largely sign up people with low self-esteem, or those desperate for qualifications, and lacking knowledge of educational options.”

Wow, I’ve seen a lot of clueless people, but this post takes the cake.

I teach onground for a college and also online courses. People that take online courses are usually in the military, working 45+ hours, have familiies, and / or don’t have a college nearby that offers the courses they need. They are much more motivated than the traditional students I have onground, and generally score higher in comparable courses.

First thing that you need to do is find out if the college is regionally accredited, you can check at www.chea.org. This means they have been reviewed by an independent third party, so that you can rely on their program.

For something like medical transcribing, you’ll have no problem having your degree accepted, we have no problem with placement. Keep in mind, a degree is just one component of the hiring process.

Free (or cheap) online courses?

Hi,

As part of my degree, I have to do 4 lots of training which can ‘develop my managerial skills’. Does anyone know where I can find any free or cheap courses which I can do online at work during my lunchbreak or whatever…

I have looked on the BBC website, but they all seem to be pretty basic stuff like reading or writing, I have also looked on the Learn Direct Website, but I think they’re probably fairly expensive…

Courses I am looking for would be things like ‘Developing Yourself’ ‘Dealing with Stress’ or ‘Communicating Effectively’ type courses…. and they should be fairly short (as in, take about 4/5 hours maximum)

Thank you, I appreciate all your help cause I’m completely stuck…
This is part of my course… it’s not to be an officially recognised course necessarily, but just to show that I have done some training… I will get my degree at the end of it, but it’s just as part of one unit…

The Open University has some free online Business & Management courses

Online schools offering bachelor degrees in special education?

Im trying to find a school online offering special education, I have googled it and found many but I would like some personal opinions.. Thanks

Glad you have already done some research.
Now you may realize that there is a long list of colleges offering a bachelor degree is special education. So what do you do about it?
There are three things you can do to cut down that list and make the best choice.
1-Check the accreditation of the colleges. If a college is not accredited, dont bother. Enrolling in an unaccredited college means wasting your money and time since the degree has no value and recognition. diploma/degree mills will lure you into join them by charging low fees and easy course content. Beware!
2- Do a background research on the faculty. Check their qualification and experience. A good faculty certainly offers a quality degree.
3- Ask students enrolled in those online colleges for their opinion. They could reveal what the college may be trying to hide.
Here are two universities that you may want to check out.
* Walden University
*George Washington University

Here is an article on online degrees in special education.

Hope that helps.

Are there free college courses online?

Or free anything for extending your schooling?

And what will an associate degree get you for a job?
Lord – but if I’m actually studying something…isn’t that what job places look for? Not just a degree? Or does it have to be valid?

There are lots of free college-level courses online. They won’t get you any college credit and won’t transfer. The paid ones get you certificates and degrees.

An Associate’s Degree in some sort of computer-related field will get you $45,000 a year to start. One in Registered Nursing gets you $70,000.

Would you be upset if the university you attend offers online degrees?

Particularly if that university is famous for providing online degrees, is that a disadvantage?
I’ve been thinking like, people would recall that oh he graduated from that university, he must’ve earned it online.

Or is it considered an advantage being a pioneer in online education as well as offering degrees by the conventional method?

A degree is a degree. Regardless how you got it, whether it was online or thru a college/university.
And personally..I believe taking online classes is much much harder than taking traditional college classes at your state or city school.

Does anyone know if Capella University and Walden University are legit colleges?

I was wondering if anyone know anyone that graduated from their online program and what jobs people currently have…

Capella University is a joke. The Chronicle of Higher Education recently published an article about the perceptions that HR directors have. The most revealing comment noted that,

"Silvia Guzman, regional human-resources manager for ProTec Building Services, likens online degrees to diploma mills or institutions that advertise on career Web sites promising to help you earn a degree in a year.

"The online degree is not weighed as heavily as a traditional degree," says Ms. Guzman, who hires people for a range of positions, including publishing, administration, and building engineering. "It’s almost like, oh, you’re purchasing a degree."

She mentioned several universities that raise red flags for her when she sees them on résumés, including Capella University, an accredited for-profit online institution, and the University of Phoenix, an accredited for-profit institution that has both classroom and online programs."

Caveat Emptor – buyer beware!

In India the leaders in Distance learning is

Apart from this, if you are interested in doing any advanced program, say in finance, many IIMs provide it (IIM-B for sure).

online bachelors of education degrees?

I recently graduated with my associates degree in Graphic Design and in this economy I did not find a job in that field and I cant waste any more time or money so I am going to work for a while with the job I do have and save some money and see where I end up. I was thinking of getting an education degree online to teach high school, I originally wanted to go and teach art but I assume you would need to go to a campus for that, and if I do go back to school I’m definitely going to take the classes online. I wanted to know if there where any bachelors of education programs online that would accept 92 credit hours from another institution.

Ashford University will accept up to 99 transferred credit hours as long as they are similar course to what they already offer. I believe they offer three different B.A. degrees in education. Here is their link.

Where can I get a free online bachelor degree in graphic media design?

i need totaly free course

In your dreams…

You can’t get something for nothing. If someone offers a Bachelor’s Degree for free, they are scamming you. If you list a fake degree on your resume, you can be fired or even prosicuted. It isn’t worth it. Apply for financial aid and do it the right way. Fill out a FAFSA form and see what kinds of grants or low interest loans you might be qualified for. Grants don’t have to be paid back. Low interest student loans don’t have to be paid back until you graduate.

I want to enroll in a south African distance learning university?

Give me any feedback (negative or positive) about south african universities & yr opinion whatever it is. The reason why I chose it is because it has a degree program that I want & didn’t find in other Distance Learning Universities. But I’m feeling skeptic about it, I’m afraid they wont accept my degree.

I don’t think you’ll have any problem. UNISA for example have many students from all over the world and accept diplomas as well. I’m currently trying to a degree through them as well and I’ve gotten only positive feedback. You’ll have to be specific. What kind of degree and where you got it from is basically not an issue. In some cases your degree should however be appropriate.

Any degree earned anywhere will earn you some points and although I have a degree from a South African University already, I don’t see why yours won’t be accepted.

How i can engage with full free well recognized online degree.(I am a sri lankan student)?

I want to engage with computer science degree & it should be full free course. also it should be well recognized world wide. Please, tell me what are the most suitable sites for me.

I’ve never heard of a free online degree, and certainly not one which is recognized worldwide. Online programs are at least as expensive as other university programs.

Can anyone tell me of any traditional universities in the UK that offer distance learning courses ?

If so, I would be interested in finding out who they are, as I am wanting to do a degree via distance learning, and I am very wary of using correspondence schools and their possible lack of accreditation as this may make my qualification worthless. Many thanks for any replies :-)

Advantages of distance learning education?

Hi all,
I have a plan to do MBA from an online college, but before taking admission I want to know about the advantages of distance learning education so I can see if it’s best for me. I’ve never done it before and it will be a major decision in my life. Please help if you have any information on this. Thanks for your help.

a) make sure the college is accredited. Places that are ONLY or MOSTLY online usually have accredation problems and you may not be able to do anything with the degree you get. Ask your advisor if your program is fully accredited with the state of (wherever you live.) The best way to make sure your degree is worth something is to check with people who already have the degree you want or check with the people who will be hiring you if it is wise to seek a degree from the place you’re enrolled in.

b) I am a full time college student and have take about 1/3 of my classes online. If you are a hard worker and you are self motivated, they are great! Just keep track of the course schedule and NEVER procrastinate. Some assignments will look like they won’t take a long time, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

c) the best thing about online classes is that you don’t have to go to class and you can do all of you work in your PJs at 2am if you want. That’s what I normally do :)

GOOD LUCK! :)

What’s a good distance learning/distance education university in Canada?

I need to pick up one or two history credits for a degree I’m pursuing. I have my BA, but I’m changing fields. I work full-time, so distance education would work best for me.

I need a reputable program where the courses start year-round. Athabasca University looks good, but has anyone had any experience with them? Is there another program I should look at?

Try University of Phoenix, I went there and got my degree online, my counselor was great and helpful, she specialized in dealing with students with foreign credentials and also assisted me with getting financial aid, her name is Alana, her phone# 602-713-4429, just call her she would be very valuable souce of info..The program was very easy and flexible…I will be starting my online masters program soon, so I am excited, If you call her tell her Britney referred you…
