UDC students have a very unique opportunity to be plugged into the expertise of university resources across the country in a program that started today (Thursday September 17, 2009). Its a project that has been months in the making and links students via fiber optic technology here in Washington to students and professors from as far away as New York and Colorado. The idea is to expand the scope of instruction and get input from multiple sources in the course of a class.

Strongly advocated and supported by Dr. Suzan Harkness, Assistant Dean in UDCs Center for Academic Technology, the initiative has been enthusiastically endorsed by all the partners involved.

The first program is a class in political science and includes participation by Dr. Harkness UDC students as well as students from Pace University in New York, George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, and Denver University in Colorado.

During the course of the current class, students will have opportunities to learn directly from experienced professors and from national newsmakers, including authors Richard Wolffe and Stephen Farnsworth, former Bush campaign manager Joe Allbaugh, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Classes are held each Thursday in the universitys television studio, located in the Building 41.

What is the criteria, why the employer did not recognised the degree completed by their employees during their service in the organizatio. How authentic and acceptable are these home and Distance Learning Courses/qualifications to employers in UK?

I dont know which specific courses you are talking about, but universities and colleges do distant learning which has the same credos as the on campus courses. In fact, many employees consider them to be a better qualification because you need more discipline to do them. make sure whatever you do is a credible place with a good reputation. ask around before signing up.

Unlike my predecessor in his answer, I must disagree – NOT many good universities offer Distance Learning Courses in interior design; and some of the courses offered out there are good maybe for housewives looking for a nice certificate to hang on the wall in their nicely decorated house, but not for people who want to make interior decoration profession.

i live in mexico and i am studying industrial design, but i wanted to find some courses that would help me find a better job and related to what i want to do (i want to design toys so i was looking for child care or child psychology courses) and i found the stratford career institute. what do you think about it? would you recomend it? or would you tell me abot other long distance courses? First off, let me tell you that distance learning (DL) is here to stay. Most major universities in the USA and Europe, and many in Latin America, offer DL courses. In fact, many major universities offer entire degrees via DL. Your main concern should be accreditation. Although every country uses its own criteria to certify or accredit schools, you want to be sure that the school you choose is accredited by a recognized entity.

In the USA, the Department of Education publishes a list of approved accrediting agencies:

Now, as for your question regarding Stratford Career Institute, I checked their web-site and could not find any mention of accreditation by a recognized agency. Although their education may be fine, I would look for a distance school with national (DETC) or regional accreditation.

My wife is enrolled at Penn Foster College, http://www.pennfostercollege.edu/ They offer career training and Associate college degrees, and are accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) which is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. I, on the other hand, have been a DL student for most of my post-secondary education. At present, I am working on a MBA at California Coast University, http://www.calcoast.edu/ which is also accredited by DETC.

There are many excellent distance education alternatives available. You are doing the right thing by asking questions and being informed.

I am thinking of taking up a course to fit around my work life. I work fulltime, so think a distance learning course would suit me best. Problem is, there are so many online sites that offer courses, how do I know what is reputable?
I don’t want to lose out on money, or be scammed either. I just want a qualification.
Can anybody recommend a site to me? x

The best places are local colleges or adult learning centres – that is if the ones in your area do distance learning.

If not, beware! I wouldn’t recommend any of the national based distance learning providers because…

They charge two or three times more than local providers do.

They don’t give a lot of support and usually send out course materials which are no better than a book you can buy for less than £20 in your local high street.

They are not registered exam centres and therefore leave you to find your own exam centre to register with, which is almost impossible as most exam centres will only take on people who are studying with them.

They are also not accountable to any Governmental authority and therefore have no commitment to see that you complete your course, and many of them will forget about you once they have your money.

These distance learning providers are not monitored in the same way that schools and colleges are. Therefore, there are no official statistics for these organisations that show the numbers of people completing courses with them, and there is no way of knowing how good or bad they are.

These are the things you need to look out for when using distance or home learning. When you see a distance learning provider who on their web site has a shopping basket for you to put as many courses in as you like and buy them, alarm bells should ring.

Most universities in NC have great Education degrees, but only a few of them are offered through distance learning. It probably depends on whether you want to get your degree in Elementary education, Middle school education or High School education (and which subject).

Walden, Capella and Phoenix are all quiet mediocre schools.

What is your purpose in doing a PhD? PhD are usually done either in order to get into academe, or in order to specialise – for the market – even more than an MBA or an MA would give you.

For the first one, PhD by distance learning is definitely a bad idea. No university would hire you as a lecturer/professor after a distance learning course; part of the PhD course in graduate schools also involves working with students, experiencing research with your supervisor, etc.

In the market, employers might still prefer a candidate with a "regular" PhD, but might accept a distance learning PhD from a good university.

Please note, that if you already have an MBA or an MA in economics, that many UK and European universities offer a PhD programme which doesn’t include any classes attendance, and if you manage to reach an agreement in that spirit with the supervisor – you might only have to visit the university several times a year, but not actually live there.

I have done my graduation in Commerce in the yr 1995 with 35% Marks. Now I want to persue MBA-Marketing from any Distance University in India.

First, if you want distance learning it is silly to limit yourself to programs in one country. Many excellent schools offer quality MBA programs by distance learning.

Second, MBA in marketing is a misnomer. The MBA is a general broad degree covering a wide variety of business issues and training students for careers in managing any area of business up to CEO. MBA students study accounting, finance, marketing, statistics, management, economics, strategy, policy, leadership and similar courses. The MBA was developed because people with technical backgrounds getting promoted into management are not always able to manage, and people in management often don’t understand the technical fields they manage. That’s why MBA programs prefer students with degrees in other than business and with 2-4 years of work experience. Their graduates learn to manage and can speak the language of the people they manage, whether that is engineering, chemistry, medicine, music, or any other field.

The MS is a degree that concentrates study in a specific field, such as finance, electrical engineering, biology, or marketing and trains students for careers in high level staff positions often involving research.

Many MBA programs offer concentrations, but this usually amounts to 2-3 elective courses in a specific field in the second year of the program. Thus an MBA in marketing may amount to a student taking Market Research, Advertising, and Consumer Behavior as a marketing concentration, while a finance concentration may mean courses in Business Mergers, Security Analysis, and Cost Accounting. Instead of a concentration, an MBA student may opt to take a broad range of electives in Production, Accounting, Marketing, Human Resource Management and other areas in order to broaden his background rather than concentrating in a single area.

I’m a diploma holder in mechanical engg with 5+ years of exp.

Apart from this, if you are interested in doing any advanced program, say in finance, many IIMs provide it (IIM-B for sure).

I’m considering changing professions to teaching but although I have a degree I don’t have good enough maths or science GCSEs from when I sat them 19 years ago. The only way to get these would be through Distance Learning Courses.
I work part-time and have a toddler so worried about fitting it all in.

Any advice or experiences welcome.

Im in exactly the same position as you. Fortunately there are 2 colleges I can choose do them at within a 20 mile radius so I wouldnt have to go the distance learning route. I would have thought you would be ok with maths as there are plenty of GCSE help websites but you may need a laboratory for experiments for the Science. May be worth your while asking the local careers service for advice to see if they can find an alternative method for it? Good luck

I am looking for a distance learning Bsc or BA. Where can I find one from a Canadian / US University?

Athabasca University. A lot of other Canadian universities refer their students to them if they want to take distance ed courses their home university doesn’t offer.

I am looking into postgraduate distance learning options. What credentials can I look for, so that I know I’m not just getting a piece of paper.
[I am very suspicious about Belford University. It claims to be accredited by the 'International Accreditation Agency for Online Universities]‘ Yet they claim you can get a degree in 7 days based on ‘life experience?!’

Open University is a decent accredited university, I’m sure many employers are aware of it. My sister is doing a course with them at the moment.

Why are you looking into doing a distance learning course though? Why not full time with a University… distance learning is not always easy, as my sister has found because it limits you from receiving help and guidance and you don’t get to learn with others.

For quite a while i’ve been looking for a distance learning course but most universities only seem to offer this option for Management and business subjects.

The UK Open University has quite a range of very interesting subject but these are very expensive for non UK (European) students.

I’ve thought of going to study abroad (im from malta) but I can’t afford to quit my job since I bought a house and have a mortgage to pay so the only option is distance courses.

Any help where I might look?
